Each year, the Small Business Centre of Barrie, Simcoe County and Orillia brings on board 20 businesses that are looking for assistance with starting, growing or purchasing a business. The Starter Company Plus program offers these entrepreneurs extensive training, mentorship, networking opportunities and the chance to receive a micro-grant of up to $5,000. Get connected to Barrie's business support network by taking the first step with the Starter Company. Eligible entrepreneurs can inquire about an application package at smallbusiness@barrie.ca.

In recent years the subject of mental health and wellness has rightfully become a common part of public discourse, with advances being made in the areas of awareness, understanding and treatment. One area where the emphasis on good mental health and resilience is particularly prominent is in competitive sports, and that’s exactly where Jelane Pryce and his company Psychvancing come in! Psychvancing is a sports psychology service focusing on helping athletes develop their competitive advantage through mental training.

Whether an athlete is on course to compete at an elite level or just wants to get more satisfaction and enjoyment out of playing in their local rec league, the Small Business Centre of Barrie, Simcoe County and Orillia has no doubt that Jelane will be helping athletes to reach their best long after he graduates the Starter Company Plus program.

What is your favourite part about being an entrepreneur?

Helping other people with the mental struggles I have faced as a competitive athlete and doing something I’m passionate about.

What inspired you to start a business?

My business was born out of my mental struggles and all the different avenues I searched through (religion, spirituality, psychology, etc.).

What services do you offer?

I offer a course to help athletes better deal with pressure to reach their potential in competitive sports. If people prefer, I also offer one-on-one sessions.

Who do you look up to for inspiration?

Jack Ma, co-founder of Alibaba Group.

If you could work with any athlete in the world, who would it be?

Ben Simmons because of the mental struggles he is going through in the NBA.

What is unique about your business?

No other online course I’ve seen uses a cognitive therapy for improving an athlete’s performance. I use worksheets for athletes to implement course material into their game and help them use the worksheet, and I go through examples of NBA players’ stories of struggle to help athletes get a better insight of mental issues and how to and how not to handle them. Not only that, but I offer more economical services than a sports psychologist and my course is more intensive than the mental health apps I see out on the market. None of the apps I’ve seen work on the cognitive side of mental training.

What is your favourite sport to watch/who is your favourite team?

Toronto Raptors are my favourite team and basketball is my favourite sport.

What one piece of advice would you give a young athlete?

Adversity is your friend.

I’d like to get into boxing.

Writing my business plan, knowledge on entrepreneurial duties, and knowledge on launching my business.
