The Starter Company Plus program is funded by the government of Ontario and delivered by the Small Business Centre of Barrie, Simcoe County and Orillia. The program is designed to help entrepreneurs start, grow or buy a business. Participants receive mentorship from experienced business professionals, access to valuable training and networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to pitch for up to $5,000 in micro-grants.

Through Automated Shade Solutions, Marcello Nicolo provides indoor and outdoor shading products for residential and commercial locations. Under Marcello’s leadership, Automated Shade Solutions was awarded the 2024 Business Excellence Award for Innovative Startup of the Year by the Central York Chamber of Commerce.

- What is your favourite part about being an entrepreneur?
My favorite part about being an entrepreneur is having the ability to transform spaces and enhance the quality of life for my clients. I enjoy building direct relationships with customers and helping them find the perfect solutions for their homes or businesses. The creativity involved in designing custom products that meet unique needs, along with the freedom to innovate and shape my business according to my vision, is truly fulfilling.
- What inspired you to start a business?
I was inspired to start my business because I’ve always had a passion for design and home improvement. I recognized a gap in the market for high-quality, personalized solutions that truly enhance spaces. I pride myself on my craftsmanship and keen attention to detail, and I ensure that every product I install not only looks beautiful but also meets the highest standards of quality.
- What services/ products do you offer?
I offer a comprehensive range of window coverings and outdoor shading products, including custom blinds and shades, elegant drapery, and outdoor solutions like pergolas and awnings. Our services also include blind motorization and smart home integration for effortless control, along with personalized consultations to help clients select the perfect fit for their unique homes. With professional installation, we ensure every product is not only beautifully designed but also functions flawlessly, enhancing both indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Who do you look up to for inspiration when it comes to either being an entrepreneur for your business?
I draw inspiration from entrepreneurs like Richard Branson, who embodies innovation and a strong customer-focused approach. His ability to take risks and adapt to changing markets resonates with my journey in the Shading Solutions industry. I also admire local business leaders who prioritize community engagement and sustainability, as they remind me of the importance of connecting with clients and contributing positively to the community. Their stories motivate me to keep pushing the boundaries of creativity and service in my own business.
- How did you come up with your business name?
The name "Automated Shade Solutions" was crafted to clearly convey the core of our business. "Automated" highlights our focus on modern, tech-savvy products that enhance convenience, while "Shade Solutions" reflects our commitment to providing tailored shading options for both interior and exterior spaces. I wanted a name that would resonate with customers looking for innovative and practical solutions, making it immediately clear what we do. It’s essential for me that the name captures our dedication to quality and customer satisfaction.
- What is unique about your business?
What sets Automated Shade Solutions apart is our ability to provide a seamless range of motorization options, from simple motorized shades to comprehensive home automation systems that fit individual lifestyles. Our app controls allow clients to easily set specific scenes based on their daily routines. - What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself through your entrepreneurial journey?
One of the most surprising things I've learned about myself is my resilience and adaptability. Starting and running a business comes with unexpected challenges, and I've discovered that I can navigate setbacks with a positive mindset and a willingness to pivot when necessary. Each obstacle has taught me to think creatively and find solutions, reinforcing my belief in the importance of continuous learning. This journey has also deepened my passion for connecting with customers, understanding their needs, and delivering exceptional service. It's been incredibly rewarding to grow not just as a business owner but as a leader in my community.
- What’s the best piece of advice you would give to another entrepreneur?
The best advice I would give to fellow entrepreneurs is that perseverance is essential to becoming successful. Every challenge you face is a chance for growth and innovation, and embracing change by being willing to pivot can open unexpected opportunities. As a director for the Bradford Board of Trade and a member of the Central York Chamber of Commerce and BNI Business Elite, I've seen firsthand the power of networking and building strong relationships within the community. Surrounding yourself with supportive peers can provide both motivation and collaborative opportunities.

Through the Starter Company Plus program, I hope to refine and enhance my business strategy by developing a comprehensive professional business plan that outlines all my goals for success. I'm committed to paying close attention to the insights shared by mentors and presenters during our weekly meetings, as their expertise is invaluable. Additionally, I aim to collaborate with fellow participants who fit into my industry or can bring benefits to my business. This program is a fantastic opportunity to grow my network, gain fresh perspectives, and ultimately position Automated Shade Solutions for greater success in the market.
