Summer Company Spotlight: Outdoors Unbound

Posted

The Summer Company program is funded by the Government of Ontario and delivered by the Small Business Centre of Barrie, Simcoe County and Orillia. The program is designed to empower young entrepreneurs aged 15 to 29 by providing them with the resources and support they need to start and run their own summer businesses. Participants receive up to $3,000 in financial assistance, mentorship from experienced business professionals, and access to valuable training and networking opportunities.

Meet Ethan Sullivan and Outdoors Unbound

Outdoors Unbound, created by Ethan Sullivan, is a beginner-focused fly-fishing guide service operating in Simcoe County, offering guided trips that provide a welcoming introduction to the sport. Targeting new and casual anglers, the business emphasizes affordability, accessibility, and hands-on learning, setting itself apart from higher-cost, trophy-focused competitors. Outdoors Unbound delivers nature-focused experiences for individuals looking to explore fly fishing while enjoying a mental reset in nature.

Follow Along for Ethan's Fly-Fishing Journey

At the beginning of the Summer Company program, Ethan shared thoughts on business goals, success, and entrepreneurship. These answers provide a glimpse into where Ethan and his business are today, and by the end of the summer, revisiting them will demonstrate the growth and progress that has been achieved throughout the program.

Why did you start this business?

“I started this business for a few reasons. First, I’m passionate about fly-fishing and sharing my knowledge with others, and this opportunity allows me to combine both. I’m also driven by the idea of being self-employed and having greater control over my future. Finally, I enjoy the variety that comes with this work. Every day brings new challenges, opportunities to connect with others, and the chance to build something bigger than myself that impacts others in a positive way”

What are your top three goals for your business this summer?
  1. Grow my brand reputation and reach 25+ five-star reviews
  2. Complete 30 guided trips by the end of September
  3. Secure partnership opportunities with industry brands like Fly Life Co and Temple Fork Outfitters
What does success look like for you at the end of the Summer Company program?

"Success is building a strong foundation of clients, resources, information, and connections that will help me continue growing well beyond this summer. Also, one day, I can hopefully give back to the community that once provided to me."

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone looking to start their own business?

“A piece of advice I'd give to someone starting a business is to think outside the box and closer to home than you'd think. I find most people assume their clients have as much knowledge as them in their field. The whole reason they're coming to you is because you are an expert, so determine the pain points of someone with next to no knowledge, not your own. If they had your knowledge, they probably wouldn't need you!”
