The Summer Company program is funded by the Government of Ontario and delivered by the Small Business Centre of Barrie, Simcoe County and Orillia. The program is designed to empower young entrepreneurs aged 15 to 29 by providing them with the resources and support they need to start and run their own summer businesses. Participants receive up to $3,000 in financial assistance, mentorship from experienced business professionals, and access to valuable training and networking opportunities.

Georgian Bay Weaves (GBW), created by Nathan Babcock, is a small business based in Simcoe County that sells handmade fiber art, including crocheted plushies, woven wall hangings, and stylized garments at local markets, festivals, and community events. Georgian Bay Weaves offers a range of one-of-a-kind items and locally inspired pieces that stand out from mass-produced products, giving customers the opportunity to find unique art, gifts, and wearable pieces that feel personal.

Follow Along for Nathan’s Journey in Fiber Arts
At the beginning of the Summer Company program, Nathan shared thoughts on business goals, success, and entrepreneurship. These answers provide a glimpse into where Nathan and his business are today, and by the end of the summer, revisiting them will demonstrate the growth and progress that has been achieved throughout the program.
Why did you start this business?
"I started GBW out of my passion for fiber arts, and with the intention of paying off my school abroad. I was working in fast food before, but I like having autonomy and independence in my occupation. GBW is a way for me to share my creative freedom and art with the world."
What are your top three goals for your business this summer?
- Become completely sustainable by generating profit consistently
- Increase revenue throughout the summer
- Maintain a strong inventory level by the end of the season
What does success look like for you at the end of the Summer Company program?
"Success looks like learning everything I need to know about building, funding, and marketing future businesses."
What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone looking to start their own business?
"The main piece of advice I would give to someone looking to start their own business would be to set clear and realistic goals. All good things start with an idea; all successful things start with a plan."
