Summer Company Spotlight: Student Fix and Clean

Posted

The Summer Company program is funded by the Government of Ontario and delivered by the Small Business Centre of Barrie, Simcoe County and Orillia. The program is designed to empower young entrepreneurs aged 15 to 29 by providing them with the resources and support they need to start and run their own summer businesses. Participants receive up to $3,000 in financial assistance, mentorship from experienced business professionals, and access to valuable training and networking opportunities.

Meet Evan Connell and Student Fix & Clean

Student Fix & Clean, created by Evan Connell, is a home service business operating in Barrie and surrounding areas that provides exterior maintenance services, including garage door cleaning, window screen repair, BBQ cleaning, and garbage bin cleaning. Designed for busy homeowners, the business offers affordable, bundled services completed in a single visit, making home upkeep quick and hassle-free.

Follow Along for Evan’s Journey in Exterior Maintenance

At the beginning of the Summer Company program, Evan shared thoughts on business goals, success, and entrepreneurship. These answers provide a glimpse into where Evan and his business are today, and by the end of the summer, revisiting them will demonstrate the growth and progress that has been achieved throughout the program.

Why did you start this business?

"I’ve always been good at talking to people, and I’ve always thought I’d be good at selling myself. Starting my own business felt like the perfect way to combine those strengths."

What are your top three goals for your business this summer?
  1. Build a repeat revenue base
  2. Land 30 recurring clients
  3. Create a referral system that turns happy customers into my marketing channel
What does success look like for you at the end of the Summer Company program?

"Success looks like building a business that can run without me. By the end of the summer, I want to be in a position where I can continue growing the business in the future."

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone looking to start their own business?

“One tip I have is to be prepared for the tough weeks, some weeks will be better than others. I would also say never give up on yourself.”
