Every year on December 5, people around the world—especially those in the not-for-profit and charitable sectors—come together to celebrate International Volunteer Day. This important day shines a light on the impact of volunteer efforts everywhere.
According to Volunteer Canada, “… volunteering helps to create connections, community and belonging”. Barrie is a volunteer city. From the hundreds of fundraising events that happen in the city annually, to the dozens of cultural, artistic, social, and other organizations that provide the community with services, programming and support, Barrie is home to thousands of people who show up and give their time and energy to causes close to their hearts.

Through the City of Barrie’s Arts & Culture Investment Program, staff track volunteer numbers provided by organizations applying for funding. In 2025, organizations reported having a total of over 1,922 volunteers supporting their operations and events.
To deliver Barrie’s special events, staff deploy volunteers in many roles. In 2025, City event organizers reported having a total of almost 500 volunteers supporting event coordination and delivery.
Volunteerism is a key resource for community development and change, and Barrie is better because of the many volunteers who call this place home. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to make Barrie the wonderful place in which we live, work, and play!
