The Summer Company program is funded by the Government of Ontario and delivered by the Small Business Centre of Barrie, Simcoe County and Orillia. The program is designed to empower young entrepreneurs aged 15 to 29 by providing them with the resources and support they need to start and run their own summer businesses. Participants receive up to $3,000 in financial assistance, mentorship from experienced business professionals, and access to valuable training and networking opportunities.
Meet Tristan Gundert and Koala Charmed
Koala Charmed, created by Tristan Gundert, is a handmade accessories business based in Oro-Medonte that creates and sells custom keychains designed to reflect individual style and personality. Each keychain is made to order, using acrylic name pieces and a selection of charms inspired by hobbies and interests, allowing customers to create something that feels unique to them. Koala Charmed offers a fun and personal alternative to mass-produced accessories, both online and at local markets.

Why did you start this business?
“I started this business to gain experience as an entrepreneur and learn different skills that I can use in all my future activities. I also really enjoy marketing so I would like to experiment with different strategies, and I want to help people express themselves in a fun way.”
What are your top three goals for your business this summer?
- Learn how to print vinyl and make keychains
- Strengthen social media marketing skills
- Help people express themselves
What does success look like for you at the end of the Summer Company program?
"Success looks like consistent social media engagement, strong sales from different people, and many completed keychains."
What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone looking to start their own business?
“One piece of advice I'd give to someone looking to start up their own business is to just start and not wait until you're ready. No matter when you begin the business, you will always make mistakes and learn new things from them.”
