Whether you're just starting out, scaling your business, or building a lasting legacy, the city offers a network of support, innovation, and community spirit that makes it easy to belong.
Barrie’s small business community is built on the foundation of shared experiences and collective success. From mentorship and inclusive programming to networking events and entrepreneurial resources, opportunities abound to meet like-minded businesspeople and build lasting connections.
In this first edition of our small business spotlight series, Thriving Together, we’re highlighting three incredible organizations working to uplift entrepreneurs and foster equity and inclusion in Barrie’s growing business landscape: the Barrie Indian Association, UPlift Black, and the Sandbox Centre.
Barrie Indian Association (BIA)

The Barrie Indian Association (BIA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting the Indian community and celebrating its cultural heritage throughout Simcoe County. With events ranging from vibrant cultural festivals to networking nights and community outreach, the BIA fosters a deep sense of belonging while boosting the visibility of local businesses.
Led by BIA President Shakir Barmare, the organization promotes multiculturalism and inclusivity, encouraging collaboration and understanding across communities. Their family-friendly programming welcomes all residents to experience the richness of Indian culture through food, music, dance, and tradition.
UPlift Black

UPlift Black is a community-focused non-profit grounded in anti-racism, equity, and social justice. It supports Black and 2SLGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs, artists, and creatives with tailored business development programs, safe space initiatives, and cultural education.
From mentorship and entrepreneur training to youth programs and newcomer-focused support, UPlift Black champions the long-term growth of underrepresented business owners in Barrie and beyond. Their Accelerate Your Proud Business program and LGBTQIA+ Newcomers Entrepreneurship Mentorship Conference, for instance, fosters empowerment through vocational training, networking, mentorship, and guidance tailored to 2SLGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs.
Sandbox Centre

The Sandbox Centre is a dynamic innovation hub where business owners, professionals, and changemakers come together to grow ideas and scale companies. As Simcoe County’s designated Regional Innovation Centre, the Sandbox Centre provides access to expertise, development programs, and a supportive network for entrepreneurs at all stages.
Their ongoing TARA Talks Women in Business Conference series empowers female-identifying professionals through engaging panel discussions, development sessions, and real conversations about navigating the business world.
